Paris 1838. While the Erard factory was in full expansion, bel canto triumphed at the opera and virtuoso pianists from all over Europe dazzled the salons. The members of La Nouvelle Athènes Olga Pashchenko, Edoardo Torbianelli, Laura Granero and the Ensemble Lélio replay these evenings when Chopin, Liszt, Czerny or Kalkbrenner were testing their latest compositions.

This area of the 9th arrondissement now houses the Casino de Paris, but was at the time the temple of the artistic intelligentsia where the Parisian salons hosted such prestigious guests as Franz Liszt, Frédéric Chopin, or the piano makers Erard and Pleyel. It was a kind of "jam session" before its time, as musical jousts and improvisation sessions were organized there. It was a very avant-garde movement at the time. So much for the background!
This is what this disc, recorded live at the Petit Palais as part of the "Romantic Paris" exhibition in early 2019, attempts to illustrate with relatively little known works such as those of the great pedagogue Karl Czerny or those of Boieldieu's disciple, Adolphe Adam. But we also find a more familiar repertoire, notably Carl Maria Weber, Franz Liszt, himself a student of Czerny, and of course Frédéric Chopin. And to make the evocation more striking, these pieces were played on a period instrument, an Erard piano from 1838. More information
Franck Mallet - Musikzen June 2020 "We thus pass from an elegant sentimental Nocturne by Czerny to an arrangement by Liszt of Schubert's famous lied Auf dem Wasser, up to Funérailles, the seventh piece of Liszt's Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, a no less famous march conceived as a symphonic poem, brilliantly performed by Olga Pashchenko. If the Chopin of the two Waltzes Op. 69, the Fantaisie-Impromptu Op. 66 and the Prelude Op. 28 No. 8 are familiar to us, Edoardo Torbianelli brings to life that rare favorite Theme from Bellini's La Norma by the Franco-German Kalkbrenner (1785-1849) - a darling of the salons who impressed the young Chopin." https://www.musikzen.fr/esprit-de-salon/6354
